Creating a Family Mission Statement

A Guide to Defining Your Family’s Purpose and Values
As moms, we desire to raise our children with purpose, intentionality, and a foundation of shared values. But in the busyness of daily life, it’s easy to get swept up and lose focus on what’s most important. That’s where a family mission statement/motto becomes so valuable—it serves as a compass, offering clarity, unity, and direction for your family’s journey.
In this post, I’m going to walk you through how to create a family mission statement that reflects your faith, values, and long-term goals for your family.

What is a Family Mission Statement?
A family mission statement is a clear and concise expression of the purpose, values, and vision that guide your family. It reflects who you are as a family, what you believe, and how you want to live. It’s a tool that can help keep your family on track and focused on your ultimate goals for your family.
Think of it as the foundation for everything you do as a family. It’s your roadmap, one that helps define who you are, what your family stands for, and where you want your future to go.

On this journey of motherhood, we want to lead with intentionality. Crafting a family mission statement or motto is a powerful first step toward living with that intentional focus. Why Create a Family Mission Statement?
A family mission statement provides a sense of direction and purpose in the following ways:
- Identity: It helps everyone understand who you are, what your family is about, and what your values are.
- Unity: It brings everyone together on the same page, helping your family stay connected.
- Focus: It serves as a reminder of the things that matter most, so that when distractions arise, your family can refocus on what’s truly important.
- Legacy: It guides the type of legacy you want to leave, teaching your children the values you hold dear, which will be passed down for generations.
How to Create Your Family Mission Statement
Creating a family mission statement might feel like a big task, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple step-by-step process that will help you craft a statement that resonates with everyone in your family.

Step 1: Start with Prayer and Reflection
Before you start writing, take time to pray and reflect on what your family stands for. Ask God to guide your hearts and minds during this process, helping you uncover the values that are most important to your family.
Some questions to ask yourself:
- Where do your values come from?
- What is most important to our family?
- What do we want to prioritize in our daily lives?
- How do we want to treat one another?
- What kind of legacy do we want to leave?
- What kind of relationships do you want to have in 20 years?
This time of reflection will help you and your family identify your core beliefs and the principles you want to live by.

Step 2: Involve Everyone in the Process
Creating a family mission statement should be a collaborative process. Involve everyone, from your littlest ones to your teens. While younger children may not fully understand the concept, they can still share ideas, and the act of involving them makes the mission statement feel personal to everyone.
If you are just starting your family, you and your husband can craft your family mission statement. As your children grow, you can include them in the process and make changes together.
You can have a family meeting to discuss your family’s values and purpose. Ask open-ended questions like:
- What do you love about our family?
- When others see our family, what do we want them to know about us?
- How do we want to treat others?
- How can we ensure that others enjoy being around us?
- What are some things we can improve on?
Take note of everyone’s thoughts and ideas. This process will help you uncover common themes and values that you can weave into your mission statement.
Step 3: Identify Your Core Values
As a family, identify the values that are most important to you. These might include faith, love, respect, kindness, work ethic, humility, integrity, service, gratitude, or anything else that feels vital to who you are.
Write down the values that come up most frequently during your discussions. You don’t have to include everything, but try to narrow it down to a handful of core values that truly resonate with your family’s identity.
These are likely to be values that you have been modeling for your children and speaking into their lives.
Step 4: Craft Your Mission Statement
Now comes the fun part—writing your mission statement! Your family mission statement should be clear, concise, easy to understand, and easy to memorize. It should reflect your family’s purpose and values, and it should inspire you to live them out.
Here are a few examples to get you started:
- “Our family exists to honor God in all we do, love one another unconditionally, serve others selflessly, and grow in grace together.”
- “We are a family that loves and serves Jesus, treats others with respect, and strives to be a light in the world.”
- “We value faith, kindness, hard work, and the importance of family time. Together, we support and encourage one another in everything we do.”
If you want to incorporate God’s word, you could have statements like these:
- “To love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love others as He loves us. We commit to growing in faith, serving one another, and shining His light in all we do.”
- “We exist to glorify God in our home and beyond by living out His truth, walking in grace, and raising children who follow Jesus with boldness and love.”
- “Our family chooses joy, speaks truth, lives with integrity, and puts Christ at the center of everything. We seek to be a safe place full of encouragement, laughter, and love.”
- “As a family, we will walk humbly with God, love mercy, and act justly. We will support, forgive, and challenge each other to be more like Christ every day.”
- “To be rooted in Scripture, growing in grace, and living on mission for God—at home, in our community, and in the world.”
Be sure to include a sentence or two that captures your family’s unique purpose and vision for the future. Keep it positive, inspiring, and motivating.

Step 5: Live It Out
Once you’ve created your family mission statement, it’s time to put it into action. Display it somewhere in your home where everyone can see it—on the fridge, in the living room, or even on your bathroom mirrors.
Discuss it regularly as a family. Share it with friends and extended family so they can support and hold you accountable. Use it as a tool to remind yourselves of your family’s values when you face challenges or decisions that require direction.
Your family mission statement isn’t just a piece of paper—it’s a living, breathing guide that will help shape your family’s future.
We did this when our children were younger. It wasn’t quite as thought out as I’ve provided for you here, but we had statements we lived by.
This was in 2000

This is our family in 2023. We’ve since added 4 more grandchildren 🥰.
