Christian Motherhood: Following Christ While Raising the Next Generation

If you’ve been following along in this series, you know we’ve already talked about biblical homemaking and creating a home where Christ is honored, love is freely given, and faith is lived out. You can read that post [HERE] You can also read the final post in the series Intentional Parenting: Why Today’s Parenting Choices Matter More Than You Think

Today, I want to talk about something even more personal—the heart of a Christian mother.

In a world that constantly tells us to do more, be more, and strive for perfection, it’s easy to believe our worth as mothers is found in how well our children behave, how clean our homes are, or how much we accomplish in a day.

God tells a different story.

Christian motherhood isn’t about raising perfect children or becoming the perfect mom.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING, AND YOU WILL NEVER ACHIEVE THAT.

It’s about following Jesus wholeheartedly and allowing Him to shape the way we love, the way we mother, and the way we care for the children He has entrusted to us.

Christian Motherhood

Before we can pour into our children, we must first be filled by Him. As I’ve shared in other posts, self-care isn’t about putting ourselves first or rewarding ourselves.

It’s about stewarding the life God has given us so we have the energy, patience, and strength to pour into our families and faithfully serve Him.

One of the greatest ways we can care for ourselves is by spending time in God’s Word, allowing it to shape the way we parent, and growing to love it more each day.

With that foundation in mind, let’s take a deeper look at today’s topic: Christian Motherhood.

What Is Christian Motherhood?

To me, Christian motherhood is intentionally pursuing Christ so that His love, grace, and truth naturally overflow into every part of your motherhood journey.

It means recognizing that motherhood isn’t simply another role we play—it’s one of the greatest ministries God has entrusted to us. In fact, if you are a mom, I believe it is THE greatest ministry God has called you to.

  • Every bedtime prayer.
  • Every meal you make.
  • Every load of laundry you do.
  • Every practice you drive to.
  • Every hug you give.
  • Every boundary you establish.
  • Every consequence you give.

Christian Motherhood

They’re all opportunities to point our children toward Jesus.

Our children won’t remember every lesson we teach, but they will remember the atmosphere we created and the faith they saw lived out in front of them.

A Christian Mother’s Greatest Calling

Long before we’re called to raise children, we’re called to follow Christ.

That’s why our relationship with Him matters so much. Christ is our foundation. He is the rock on which our families are built. His word is a lamp unto our feet and a light onto our path, and that goes for motherhood.

Our children don’t need a mama who has all the answers.

They need one who knows where to find them.

  • When they see us opening God’s Word…
  • When they hear us pray...
  • When they watch us ask for forgiveness…
  • When they witness us trusting God when life is hard…

They’re learning what it means to walk with Jesus and trust Him.

Our faith isn’t something we simply teach. It’s something we live out every day in our homes and outside of our homes.

Whether we’re at home, at church, at work, or in the grocery store, our children should see the same person. Authentic faith isn’t reserved for Sunday mornings—it’s woven into the way we love, speak, serve, and treat others every single day.

Characteristics of a Christian Mother

She Loves Jesus First

The greatest gift we can give our children isn’t a perfect childhood—it’s a mother whose life is rooted in Christ.

As we grow closer to Him, we’ll naturally become more patient, more gracious, more forgiving, and more loving. That doesn’t mean we will never get upset or angry; it just means we are characterized by the qualities of a Christ follower.

She Prays Continually

Prayer becomes one of the most powerful ways we love our children. God tells us to pray without ceasing. That is especially true in motherhood. I can’t even tell you how many nights I lay awake with worry that led to prayer.

  • We pray for their hearts.
  • We pray for health.
  • We pray for wisdom.
  • We pray for protection.
  • We pray for future friendships, spouses, and decisions.

Prayer is not a last resort; it is the first tool in our hands. We can’t change our children, but our God can. God can work in their hearts.

Christian Motherhood

I’ve seen prayer work firsthand in my life and in our home. For years, I’ve prayed for wisdom, protection, spouses, etc. God has been faithful and has seen us through challenging circumstances.

She Lives What She Believes

Children learn as much from what they see as they do from what they’re told. Contradiction or hypocrisy evidenced by our actions will not bode well for gaining respect from our children.

The good news is that God can do anything despite our actions. He is powerful and can overcome our failures. BUT, let’s remember who we answer to ultimately.

Children are constantly observing your behavior. They are watching you like a hawk. Staying close to Jesus and living what you believe is the difference maker.

If we hope our children will love God’s Word, let them know we are reading it.

If we hope they’ll be kind, let them see us being gracious and kind to others.

If we hope they’ll trust God, let them watch us trust Him-even when it is hard.

Our everyday example becomes one of our greatest teaching tools. Walk the talk. Live by example. Practice what we preach.

She Chooses Grace Over Perfection

There will be days when we lose our patience. Days when cereal is the best dinner option. Days when we say the wrong thing and you want to grab hold of those words and put them back in your mouth.

Christian motherhood isn’t about pretending we never fail because we do and we will. It’s about being humble and accepting our faults while acknowledging them to our children. The beautiful thing is that children are gracious and easily forgive.

It’s about being willing to apologize, ask forgiveness, and allow our children to see the beauty of God’s grace at work in our own lives. In fact, even as a mama to adult children, I am still apologizing when I mess up.

She Loves Unconditionally

Our children should never have to wonder whether they’re loved. Give love unconditionally and freely, no matter the circumstances. They need to know they are deeply loved, and circumstances will never change that love.

Unconditional love is loving your child no matter what, not based on

  • their behavior
  • their attitude
  • their choices

Long before they achieve anything, they’re deeply loved—not only by us, but by their Heavenly Father.

Christian Motherhood

Our words, our hugs, our encouragement, and our presence remind them of that love every day. I heard some advice a few years back, and I’ve used it often. Hug your children until THEY end the hug.

I started doing this with my adult children, and they will hug me for a long time. There is nothing like grabbing those long hugs from your adult children.

Why Your Faith Matters

We all know that motherhood can be exhausting. It’s part of the job description.

There will be seasons when you feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or unsure whether you’re making any difference at all. That’s why your relationship with Jesus isn’t just important—it’s ESSENTIAL.

He is the One who gives us wisdom when we don’t know what to do. He gives us patience when ours runs out.

He reminds us that His mercies are new every morning. And boy, do I need to be reminded of that at times.

The more we WALK in relationship with Him, the more His character becomes evident in the way we love our families. We are no longer mothering in our own strength but leaning on His.

A Final Encouragement

Mama, remember this:

God never asked you to be a perfect mother. He asks you to faithfully follow Him.

I’ve said it in both posts from this series now…your children don’t need perfection. They need your presence. They need your prayers. They need your example.

And most of all, they need to see a mama whose greatest desire is to know Jesus and help them know Him too.

I had the joy of witnessing this last week as we helped our son and daughter-in-love move to a new state.

One day, we were in line at a Chick-fil-A drive-thru, and out of the blue, our grandson peered out the window and asked the worker if she knew Jesus. She said, ” Yes 🥰. My sweet grandson cared about the salvation of a girl he didn’t even know.

The last night we were there, Jeff and I were doing bedtime with this same grandson. We read from his Children’s Bible and prayed with him before bed.

He knew every Bible story we read together. Then, when it was time to pray, he bowed his little head and prayed the kind of prayer you’d expect from a six-year-old—thanking God for Mommy, Daddy, his sister, his brother, Gigi, and Poppy.

But then something beautiful happened.

He began praying God’s Word. He prayed that he would put on the full armor of God, carefully naming each piece—the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the rest.

In that moment, we had the privilege of observing our grandson reciting God’s word in his prayers.

One day, our children will likely forget the meals we cooked or the laundry we folded, but they’ll never forget the Word of God they are hiding in their hearts, and they won’t forget how you taught it to them.

To be honest, we could have done so much better, and hearing my six-year-old grandson pray God’s Word was both humbling and inspiring. It reminded me that there is always room to grow in our own faith and in the way we disciple the next generation. But it also reminded me that God can use us even through our shortcomings.

Maybe you’re feeling that way, too. If so, take heart. God is gracious and kind. He is able to work through our inadequacies, redeem our imperfections, and accomplish far more than we ever could in our own strength. It’s never too late to begin faithfully pointing our children to Him.

Christian Motherhood

In other words, do the best you can, Mama. God will do the rest.

Let’s be women who love Jesus deeply, so that our children can’t help but see Him in us.

From my heart to yours,

Kim
