8 Ways to Add Winter Decor to Your Home

Share with a friend!

Winter decor, say what? I mean what exactly IS adding winter decor to your home, right? Those were my exact thoughts a couple of years ago honestly. Is that really a thing? Here’s what I would say… it’s really a little thing and it’s not too hard.

Making Home

Making home, as I like to call it, requires some intentionality. Having forethought and being intentional about making your home a loving, fun, warm, and inviting home where your family feels loved and loves to be is the ultimate goal. So while the thought of “winter decor” might seem over the top and possibly overwhelming, I promise you it isn’t too hard.

Keep it Simple

I think one thing you will find here at Kim Grant Home is that I like to keep things somewhat simple. I don’t want to overwhelm myself or you, for that matter, with grandiose expectations of being a Martha Stewart or Julia Childs (even though they are both very talented women).

For me and probably for you, there are too many other things to do in our busy lives! So stay with me on this one and give some thought to adding a little winter decor to your home 😘.

Winter can be long and dreary if you live in the Northeast. Adding a bit of winter decor is a way to brighten up your home and in turn, brighten up your spirits in the middle of a cold and dreary month. Keep reading to hear more!

A Fresh Start

For me, January is an indicator of a fresh start. As I said in my post Steps to Organize & Simplify Your Home & Accomplish More, I actually enjoy and dare I say, look forward to putting away Christmas. It just feels so good to simplify and clear out all the things from Christmas.

As I return our home to its everyday attire after Christmas, I am slow to bring back all of my decor because keeping it, low-key, and minimalist is refreshing to me.

Rearranging and Restyling

This year, for some reason, I was in the mood to make a significant change in the placement of our furniture. We did a little switcharoo with our family room couch and basement couch. I get these ideas sometimes and I have to go with them. Hubby and I moved three large couches into new places. It was quite comical actually but we did it.

My fear is always what if I don’t like a change I’ve made, especially because it took so much effort. But the good news is, I loved it. It opened up the room and was the simplicity I was seeking after.

Don’t be afraid to try something new. After all, you can always move it back!! Rearranging and restyling can give your home a new, fresh feel! Try it, you might like it! So now that the furniture is in its new place, it is time to add in a few winter elements.

What is Winter Decor?

So what does that mean for my home, and yours, as we look to add touches of “winter decor”? Honestly, it is nothing new and things I have been doing for years but it now has a name-winter decor. Keep reading!

There are a few winter decor items that will carry over from Christmas and a couple of extras you will need to add. And it’s not a whole lot because remember that Organize and Simplify post? Keep your winter decor to a minimum and very subtle.

Finally, the list. You may have many of these in your repertoire, but if not, it takes very little money to achieve. So if you are budget conscious like me, this is for you too!

I’m going to list them right here! But if you want to dig deeper and learn more keep reading!

1. Faux and Real Plants

Our home has a LOT of white…white walls, white furniture, and white cabinets to name a few. In January, bringing touches of the outside in does wonders to elevate and lift the mood on those dark, cold days.

I love white and I am definitely team white but I love to accent with warm wood tones and little notes of green. Green balances the white and wood and gives it life.

Faux plants, flowers, and stems have a significant impact on the look and feel of your home during the winter months. It provides a subtle reminder that spring is just around the corner. And who doesn’t need the hope of spring in January???

I have two real plants that I’ve been keeping alive this past year and they are not only surviving but thriving…woohoo…(apparently you cannot kill these two types of plants so I shouldn’t brag too much 😜)…but they are still living! See the little snake plant to the left of the flowers below! That is one of them 🤣

2. Fresh Cut Flowers

Let’s talk fresh-cut flowers for a brief minute. I used to hate spending money on flowers, but my thinking regarding this topic has done a complete 180. I do my best to have them in our home on the regular.

My favorite places to purchase flowers are Costco, Weis, Whole Foods, and Wegman’s. Check your local grocery stores. They have beautiful and inexpensive bouquets. I don’t live near a TraderJoes but they have wonderful, inexpensive flowers as well! This one below is from Costco and it lasted almost two weeks!)

Flowers are like a big, beautiful, colorful hug. They bring God’s magnificent creation into the heart of our home when the world outside has gone dormant for the winter.

My favorites are tulips, hydrangeas, roses, and daisies. I love this quote by Claude Monet below and honestly, it’s become my own mantra over the past couple of years🌷. If you go to Kim’s Home you can get a glimpse of the flowers in my yard in summer.

I have several hydrangea bushes. It’s been a dream of mine to have a yard full of hydrangeas and I’ve been working on it for the past couple of years.

This year I was finally able to cut them and bring them in and they were magnificent to have in my home. It is extremely easy to dry them.

I currently have them in a vase and basket above the hutch as seen here! If you don’t have any hydrangeas in your yard, ask a friend who does to cut a few for you next summer. It’s such a fun and inexpensive way to bring the outside in!

3. Warm Cozy Blankets and Pillows

Not only do the plants and flowers, whether faux or real, bring green into our home, but you can add green in other ways too. I bought a beautiful green knit throw blanket with whimsical pom poms and a green velvety pillow with stitches of gold a couple of years ago.

Both the green blanket and pillow are from Target and they are part of my Christmas decor. However, I decided not to pack them away in the Christmas bins. They stayed right where they were and the warmth they bring to our family room in winter is c’est magnifique 💋

Do you have a collection of cozy blankets? If not, maybe it’s time to add some. In my opinion, curling up on the couch with your loved ones and a cozy blanket in the winter is the best! It’s actually something I do love about winter.

Adding pillows in neutral colors with wonderful texture and warmth does a perfect job of tying everything together. This gives your home a cohesiveness in color but adds interest with texture.

4. Pine Cones

I have this wonderful long skinny wood bowl I found at Home Goods. Last year, I filled it with pine cones and put it on my mantle under our TV. This year I have it in my office on a table.

I have a white sleigh on my dining table that is filled with pine cones next to an evergreen tree with snowflakes. I love this little vignette for the winter. They are leftover from Christmas decor and work perfectly for winter.

5. Sleighs and Snowflakes

Do you have any sleighs or snowflakes to use? You can make homemade snowflakes and hang them from the ceiling for fun. Your kids will love this if you have young children!!

Can we talk about the TV for a moment? Our TV is over the fireplace. It’s really the only place in our family room that it can be. Honestly, it is not my favorite place to have it, but the gift of Youtube screen savers has been a blessing to me over the past two years 😘.

You can find one of my favorites below. It’s so much more inviting than a black screen. If you haven’t added a screen saver from Youtube yet, then try it. It will definitely elevate any room and it’s FREE!

6. Candlelight

One of my favorite things to do all winter is to keep the electric candles in the windows until we turn the clocks ahead in Spring.

We have the candles connected to a wireless remote control outlet. It comes with two remotes. We have one downstairs and one by my side of the bed. All I have to do is click on or off five buttons to control the candles in the windows.

Technology is a beautiful thing sometimes. No more walking around to every window every day at sunset and every night before we go to bed.

I recommend adding battery-operated candles around your home too. And, of course, my favorite candle to add is the good ole regular scented candle. If you know me at all, you know I’ve almost always got a candle burning in my kitchen. My scent of choice for winter is anything mocha or coffee.

You can find more about that in my posts 6 Steps To Making Home and How to Awaken Your Child’s Senses at Home. Remember the word intentional from the beginning of this post? Both of these blog posts talk about intentionality in your home.

Adding vintage brass candlesticks in a collection, in pairs or by themselves can also add a bit of whimsy and winter to your home. We are currently collecting brass candlesticks for our daughter’s wedding in June ❤️

7. Stars and Lanterns

Stars and lanterns add some fun winter elements if you have any around. I use lanterns outside in the summer. In the winter I bring them in and they add a touch of cozy. Stars have always been a favorite of mine so they have been in my decor collection for years.

I’ve altered them over the years by painting them to match my decor. Don’t forget to get creative with paint. It can work wonders! You can see one of my stars here by the hutch in my kitchen.

8. Vintage Art With Winter Scenes

Last, but certainly not least, add vintage art with winter scenes. I’ve only got two in my home but I love them so much!

The winter scene below is one of my faves. I picked it up at Hobby Lobby a couple of years ago. It definitely has a vintage feel and fit perfectly in my kitchen last year. This year I’ve added it to the fireplace near my new winter art.

I’ve been finding myself looking for more vintage art to add around my home. This past November Jeff and I were at a barn sale in Coopersburg. We saw the most beautiful painting depicting a home in the snow. I fell in love with it. I decided it was a no for that day because it was Christmas and we didn’t need to spend the money.

Guess what showed up under our tree on Christmas morning? My very thoughtful husband called the owner of the barn sale and arranged to buy it for me for Christmas. I was completely surprised and couldn’t wait to get it hung after Christmas.

Point Your Family to God

I love these verses in Philippians and have to say this painting is excellent and praiseworthy and I love how it makes me feel every time I walk into the room.

“Whatever is lovely…think about such things.” I know, I know… probably a little bit out of context, but nonetheless, God designed a beautiful world and it points us to Him. Bringing these simple touches of winter to your home can make a world of difference and add all the cozy feels to your home.

I believe our homes can be a place of beauty and peace and refuge and that can certainly bring us to the feet of Jesus. Did you know you can bring God into your home by the beauty you surround your family with?

You can do it through plants, flowers, cozy blankets and pillows, pine cones, sleighs, snowflakes, candlelight, lanterns, stars, and vintage art. And I bet you can get creative and add your own touches of winter too. These are just things to get you started.
