Laundry Room Makeover

You might be wondering why anyone would really want to spend time or money on a laundry room makeover. I mean who really sees it anyway, right? Something I have come to understand more fully as of late is that I will see it and why do I minimize that?!
My Why For Our Laundry Room Makeover
If you are like me, you are in your laundry room EVERY SINGLE DAY. Many people do their laundry once or twice a week. That is not me. I am a “do a load or two” everyday kind of girl. I am in my laundry room all the time.
If I walk into my laundry room and it’s ugly and a mess and unorganized and cluttered, guess what? I don’t want to be in there. I will avoid the laundry room if at all possible and that is no bueno.
However, if I walk in and it’s organized and clean and it looks pretty just maybe I don’t mind being in there so much! Could I actually enjoy laundry and have a feeling of peace and joy while there? I can and I do.

Our laundry room is honestly barely a room. So let me preface this by saying this is NOT the most beautiful laundry room you will ever see on Pinterest or Instagram. It is small and it won’t win any home decor awards.
This post isn’t about creating the prettiest laundry room ever. It is more about making it functional and useful, uncluttered, and organized. All the while, simultaneously making it a happy and pleasant room with a touch of pretty.
As I said before, this room is small. As you enter from our garage, the washer and dryer are directly left and there is a straight path to the powder room. It is maybe 8 feet.
I have mixed feelings about the powder room placement in our home. It is wonderful that it is hidden away and private because who wants to go to the bathroom in a place where noises can be heard??? 😳
Unfortunately, you have to go through our laundry room to get to it. For that very reason, it is NOT a laundry room that can become a dumping ground.

The door to the garage is in the laundry room and we come in and out several times a day. If the path becomes a drop zone and gets cluttered this is a problem.
Get Organized and Declutter the Laundry Room
I don’t know about you, but clutter has a way of weighing me down. It is distracting and keeps me from staying focused and getting things done.
The overwhelm paralyzes me and can cause me to be less productive. I have learned this about myself and it is something I am working on. My post 6 Steps To Making Home also touches on organization and decluttering.
I will be the first to admit that I function more efficiently when things are in order in my home. It would be so good if I could say I’m able to put things aside and focus regardless of the state of my home on any given day, but this is something I struggle with.

I am working hard to let the little things go and not obsess about perfection. I have worked hard at making a place for everything. When there is a designated space for coats and shoes and laundry detergent and dryer lint and all the things, it is a lot easier to keep everything organized.
Laundry Room Makeover
Whenever I start a project I find it helpful to clear the space I am working in. It’s not uncommon for me to jump in and start and not clear out anything. That usually occurs when I can’t wait to get started and don’t take the time to prep the room.
Let’s Prep the Laundry Room For Its Makeover
For the laundry room makeover, I took the time and prepped thoroughly, especially since it is a very small space. I had no choice but to clear it out to get the job done. It didn’t take too long to clear out the room. We pulled out the washer and dryer (hubby helped with that). The laundry room was a clean slate to begin with.
Let’s Shop
My daughter and I headed to our favorite place…Target. We were able to grab a few things that would help us organize all the laundry room incidentals! My goal was to find a place for everything in the laundry room.
There is a quote that says “A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place”. It is attributed to Ben Franklin but not everyone agrees. But nonetheless, this is my desire for our laundry room.
I found rectangular tin storage bins at the Target Dollar Spot. And, no, they weren’t a dollar but instead, three dollars, which was still in my budget😘.

Hubby and I put up shelves over the washer and dryer about a year prior. The tin bins would fit perfectly. A round tin container for garbage and lint was not only the perfect size but also super cute.
Every time I clean out the dryer vent I walk to the kitchen garbage. But now it had a place right there in my laundry room. Not sure why I didn’t think to do this before🤷🏼♀️.
A hanging basket was the perfect way to store my ever-growing collection of grocery bags.

After Target we ventured to Home Goods. We picked up a cute laundry basket, as well as, two flexible, cloth storage bins. All of these items were tallied at around 60 dollars. We were able to find everything we needed for our laundry room makeover.
Let’s Clean
I did a deep clean and gave the walls behind the washer and dryer a fresh coat of paint. This was not in the original plan but decided it was a good idea given we had the washer and dryer pulled out to clean.

Let’s Finish The Laundry Room
At this point, we scooted the washer and dryer back in place, added the storage containers to the shelves, and started filling them with all the things.
I added a cute laundry sign that currently hangs between the two shelves. The sign adds a touch of whimsy and some farmhouse-style decor to the room. A faux plant also brings a little color and sunshine to the room.
Pretty Storage
It is wonderful to have a place to place the laundry supplies. The containers allow the shelves to look less cluttered. I repurposed a large mason jar vase that had a lid and filled it with laundry detergent. It sits on my dryer, looks great, and adds some color to the space.

For my dryer sheets, I dug out of storage a vintage Longaberger basket. I have two market baskets by Longaberger stored on the shelves to grab quickly when needed. This is the perfect spot to keep them. I often grab these when I need to take a meal to someone.
Placing hooks by the nook at the back door has really helped with coats, bags, and purses. A large basket for shoes finishes off the space.
Honestly, this was a quick and easy project with a big reward in the end. I am now able to leave the barn door open to my laundry room. This adds additional sunlight to our family room.

This is an updated post from my previous blog My Willow Tree Life. We completed our laundry room makeover two years ago. Doing laundry is so much more pleasant and we have been able to maintain the organization with relative ease.
Make Everything Beautiful
Creating inviting, beautiful spaces to work in is important and this is why I brought this post over. Not many people may see your laundry room but YOU do and that matters.
My post, How to be Confident in Your Home Decor Style is a fun read. Surround yourself with a pretty space that makes you feel good and makes you smile. It makes doing work so much more enjoyable. I love this saying from Elsie De Wolfe.

In Conclusion
Making your home a place you love to be is important for you and your family. Organizing takes some planning and a little time, but in the end, it is absolutely worth the effort.
It is especially helpful in areas of your home considered drop zone areas. An organized mudroom or laundry room can make Mama’s life a little less stressful.
Thanks for following our laundry room makeover!
Much Love~Kim 💗
