Boho-Farmhouse Style Bedroom Makeover For Our College Girl

Come along with us on this fun bedroom makeover! In this post my girl and I take her teenage bedroom and elevate the sophistication and style. It was so fun taking on this Boho-Farmhouse style bedroom makeover together!
“Let’s do it!” was my response when she came to me and asked if we could make her room a little more sophisticated!! Of course! And oh, how could I say no?! Making home is my passion and the fact that she wanted to do it together made me so very happy.
At the time of this makeover, my daughter, Maggie, was 20 years old. Any time I get with her is invaluable to me, especially since she is away at college most of the year. This Boho-Farmhouse bedroom makeover was so fun and her room has now become the perfect combination of styles we both love.
Let’s Pick a Style
In her quest to make her room a little more sophisticated, Maggie was trying to describe to me what she wanted. She had shown me a few pictures and it didn’t take long for me to name it… “That’s Boho!” I exclaimed.
I love the Boho style and although it’s a little different than the rest of our home decor I loved the challenge of changing it up a bit and experimenting with a new style. After we realized Boho was what she wanted, we headed straight to Pinterest and the ideas began to flow. Below see her bedroom before. The idea of a boho-farmhouse-style bedroom was birthed!
Before-A preteen/teenage bedroom

Cute, right??? It was very cute but maybe a little young for a college girl. There were two things to consider. Number one, we needed to be mindful of the budget. My goal is always to be wise with our money. Maggie will be finishing college and more than likely getting married so my first thought is let’s shop our home and repurpose what we already have.
After: A College Girls Bedroom

Paint Color
Let’s start with the big things. First, wall color. We actually painted Maggie’s room a couple of years ago. It was a pale gray (Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore) I love this color! So much so that it is also in our finished basement. This would definitely work for the new vision we had for her room.
We took everything off the walls, patched all holes, and, fortunately, we had leftover paint to cover where the holes were. The first change we wanted to make was to the bed. It’s not like we had an extra bed sitting around waiting to be used.
Bed Style
Her current bed frame is super cute but it was not the look we were going for. It is from Ikea and it had been in Maggie’s room for several years. We ended up dismantling her bed frame and removing the headboard. We then took the footboard and used it as the new headboard. The mattress and boxspring went on the floor and with the height of the headboard (old footboard), it was perfect.

We moved the large white shelf over her bed. This gave the bed frame a little height since it was on the floor. And the style worked great for her boho-farmhouse-style bedroom makeover.
This particular shelf has had nine lives. I designed it and my hubby built it about 25 years ago. We have painted it and used it over and over again in several of our homes in several different rooms and in several different ways.
The original bedside table was not going to work with the Boho style so we swapped it with one from another bedroom. I move furniture from room to room on-the-regular around here. For her bedspread, I had a large white coverlet that was not being used and it worked perfectly for what we had in mind.

Pillows, Pillows, and More Pillows
Pillows? I have oodles of pillows on our sectional in the basement and more scattered throughout the house and in our storage area (I might have a problem🤷🏼♀️) so we shopped our home and got a variety of pillows to add to her bed.
We used gray, gold, and a macrame one with great texture that would work with the boho vibe we were seeking to achieve. The dresser and desk remained, however, they were moved to a different location in her room and we replaced the white chair with a black one to give it more of a modern touch.

A cozy blanket was added (a keepsake from her high school soccer career) to the bed and another gray blanket has become a makeshift slipcover for her purple chair to save a little money.
We may revisit whether we purchase another chair for that corner but for now, this will do. Cute pillows were a nice addition to the chair to make it a tad bit more cozy and whimsy. I had a pair of curtains from Home Goods that I bought for another room and never used. They are white and have a square pattern with some texture to them. See below.

Accents and Accessories for Our Boho-Farmhouse Style Bedroom
This is where the real fun comes in and where we add those extra final touches to make it feel personalized and homey. It’s like adding jewelry to an outfit. This is my favorite part!!

An old window frame leans on her bookshelf as well as unique picture frames, candlesticks, and faux plants (I understand that real ones are “in” right now and probably more Boho but faux are easier for sure) 🤷🏼♀️, twinkle lights from her dorm room, a large tin “M” she had previously hanging in her room, and a few signs with positive, uplifting words.

Meaningful Decor
One of my favorite signs in her room is the big one with Joshua 1:8&9 over her dresser. This was one we bought for her dorm room. It had a reminder I wanted her to see every day. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you WHEREVER you go.” How perfect for her to see these words every day while at school.
My hubby salvaged a long skinny ladder-like shelf out of the garbage a couple of years ago. It has been sitting in our basement but finally found a home in her room.
I removed the backing on it as well as the blue country hearts and hung it. This shelf provides a place for little treasures and to hang necklaces. The hooks for the necklaces will be added later.

Hang The Hats
The clock from Ikea was one we had and the picture boards and frames were all in Maggie’s room previously. And last but not least, giving it the final Boho look we hung Maggie’s hats. This was about as far as repurposing what we had took us and honestly the room looked pretty great.

Maggie found a circle mirror from Kirkland’s for over her desk. It took some searching but she was diligent and found one for a third of the price compared to any other mirror we could find. The quality and size were exactly what we were looking for… and oh yeah, it has this cute rope to hang it!!
We ordered an accent rug and woven wall hanging from Target. Do you see the basket weave bamboo pendant light over her chair? This comes from World Market and was the biggest splurge

And now this teenage room has become a grown-up, sophisticated room and my girl LOVES it and so do I! Her room is a nice combination of the Boho style and Farmhouse style.
It definitely has a Boho feel to it but a better description might be Boho meets Farmhouse. Fortunately, Maggie and I are okay with that because they mesh our styles together perfectly.
Here is the thing I love about this Boho-Farmhouse Style Bedroom makeover, not only did it make her room more sophisticated, but we recycled and repurposed much of what we already had.
Recycled & reused
Recycled: Desk (free-found while on a walk-the owner drove it to our house- chalk painted), dresser (paid $10.00 for at a flea market-chalk painted), side table (bought at Goodwill for 5 dollars-chalk painted), ladder shelf (free-salvaged from garbage) accessories, curtains, chair, shelf, pillows, bedding (all things we already had). Our Boho-Farmhouse Style Bedroom Makeover Done on a Budget
This special little project makes me so happy. Taking old things and making them new is a passion of mine. Just as important, is wisely spending our money because we are still helping our college girl pay for her education sooooo…we are always on a budget :-).
At the same time, I am teaching her that you don’t always have to spend a boatload of money to make a change. Creativity and hard work can produce change and make something new again!
My Favorite Part of Our Boho-Farmhouse Style Bedroom Makeover
But truth be told, my absolute favorite part of this makeover was the part where I got to work with my college girl. TOGETHER, we made special memories that will last a lifetime.
As a parent of adult children, I can’t believe how fast time has gone by. Grabbing every minute I can with my adult children is a priority. I am so thankful for the beautiful relationship I have with my daughter.
My hope is that this post inspires you to get creative, repurpose what you have, do a project together with someone you love, or perhaps tackle a mini makeover in your own home.

This post is from my original blog, My Willow Tree Life, and was posted a couple of years ago. Oh, time is flying by. I added it to Kim Grant Home because it was well-loved.
I am so thankful we created a space for her to enjoy when she is home from school because as of next June, she will be married and no longer living with us. As I said, time flies. Enjoy those moments with your kiddos at home mamas. They go so fast!
Much love~Kim 💗
